EV Code Signing Certificates

Code Signing Certificates with Extended Validation

Extended Validation (EV) Code Signing

The Gold Standard for Authentication and Security

EV Coding Signing Certificates is the gold standard for authentication and security. It provides all the benefits of a standard digitally-signed code with an additional layer of security. By purchasing EV Code signing certificates, a rigorous extended validation process will be undertaken as outlined by the validation standards from the CA/Browser Forum and to Microsoft applications. An encrypted physical token containing the private key will be provided and this serves to enhance the authentication of the software.

About EV Code Signing

Code signing certificates are used by software developers to digitally sign a program to prove that it has not been altered or compromised by a third party. Buying software from retail stores is typically safe and free from malware and viruses but not software downloaded from the Internet. Signing your code would distinguish your software from the malicious ones and protect your software from malware, tempering and theft.

Code signed with EV certificates builds your reputation and reduce warning messages with Microsoft’s SmartScreen® Application Reputation filter. Because DigiCert partners with Microsoft, EV code signing certificates gives you immediate recognition in Windows® 8 and 8.1 and Internet Explorer® 9, 10, and 11. DigiCert certificates are also compatible with Windows Mobile, Authenticode, Kernel Mode, Office, VBA, Java, Adobe, and more.

How It Works

After you purchased a code signing certificate and have downloaded a suitable code signing ‘engine’ for your operating system, use the ‘engine’ to select the code you want to sign and sign it with your certificate token. For EV Code Signing Certificate, the token is stored on an external USB device that will be provided when you purchase your certificate. Once signed, the code will contain a timestamp with your company’s information to let users know the code origins and that it has not been tampered with. The stamp in the EV certificate also let Microsoft’s SmartScreen filter knows the code is secured. EV certificate goes through a more rigorous validation process and involves offline verification.

Protect Your Customers

Extended validation code gives users greater confidence in applications by demonstrating the code has not been tampered with and has gone through a thorough verification process by a trusted third party.

code-signing_09Monitoring and Enforcement Made Easy

A digitally-signed code will have a time stamp that proves the code was signed with a valid certificate even after the certificate expires. This makes it easy to screen for modified files and helps users identify the authenticity of the code.

code-signing_14Meet Partner Requirements

With an EV code signing certificate, your partners and distribution channels will know your software is safe and legitimate. This gives them great confidence to share your application thereby, benefiting you as a software developer.

code-signing_17Your Reputation

Warning messages that pop up during installation makes software look unprofessional and dangerous. Code signing eliminates these messages ensuring a smooth installation process removing casting away doubts users might have on your brand and application.

code-signing_24Increased Confidence

With the proliferation and widespread of malware and viruses, everyone is becoming cautious of what they download online. Any error messages or warnings during download and installation would likely turn users away. DigiCert EV code signing certificates conform to the highest standards in authentication and signals trust to users. After spending the time and effort on an application, the last thing that you want to happen is for someone to ruin it. With DigiCert EV code signing certificate, you can have a peace of mind knowing your code has been validated by a CA known for its high assurance standards.

code-signing_22Establish Reputation with Microsoft’s SmartScreen® Filter

Using an EV code signing certificate on programs can immediately establish a reputation with Microsoft’s SmartScreen® Filter even if no reputation exists before for that file or publisher. New publishers, in particular, get to benefit from this immediate reputation.

code-signing_32Increased Security

DigiCert EV code signing certificates come with an enhanced feature of storing a certificate’s private key on a secure hardware token. This extra layer of security protects the integrity of your code, knowing the USB is used during the signing process

code-signing_29Increase Adoption

The lesser problems users encounter during installation and with the software, the more likely they’ll recommend it to others. Code signing helps increase adoption rate by removing unexpected warning messages, allowing users to complete the installation and use the software with confidence.
