Compare SSL Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP)

Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) is an internet protocol that works synchronously backend as you access a site that is https secured. OCSP is activated the moment you enter a https site and works to verify the validity of the certificate from a trusted third-party Certificate Authority (CA).

Choosing a fast OCSP response speed provider is imperative when purchasing SSL as this greatly improves overall user experience websites. Studies from multiple sources have shown that slow website speed results in (1) loss in sales and (2) drop in website traffic. This applies likewise for slow OCSP response speed, in which a lag in the https protocol and green secure padlock in the browser address bar will result in visitors exiting from your site.

For business and website owners, a slow OCSP response time may be of hindrance to operations and as much as possible, it’s best to minimize these events from proceeding.

(1) Loss in Sales for E-Commerce Business

According to a study by Amazon, every 100 milliseconds of latency will cost your online business 1% loss in sales. For e-commerces, it is of paramount importance that the green secure padlock appears on time without lagging, since the security icon determines how well a visitor trusts your site on the first impression. A fast OCSP response time from a CA contributes to a faster loading speed of the security padlock, gaining immediate confidence from visitors.

In a previous article on “increase sales conversion for e-commerce startup”, I highlighted on how the human eye sees the top left-hand corner on the first instance, and it is where the green secure padlock is located. Just as visitors browse in an e-commerce site, their subconscious mind is scanning through to see if the site is safe for purchase.

(2)Drop in Website Traffic affects Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

In another study, Google found an extra 0.5 seconds in search page generation dropped traffic by 20%. OCSP contributes to overall website speed, and a delay may penalize your website rankings on Google’s Search Engine Ranking Page (SERP).

“You may have heard that here at Google we’re obsessed with speed, in our products and on the web. As part of that effort, today we’re including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed.” – Google Web Master

Certificate Authority (CA) with the best OCSP Response Time

CAs have some control over OCSP response speeds and Netcraft, an independent market research company for web server has found that DigiCert has the fastest response time of 34 milliseconds amongst its competitors.

DigiCert attributes the reason for the lowest overhead amongst its competitors, which translates to fastest site response for end-users and increased site speeds. DigiCert added that they have 100% OCSP server uptime and response times up to 4 times faster than their competitors, as they distribute the OCSP servers globally for faster responses.

DigiCert SSL certificates are used by globally recognised companies such as Facebook, IBM and Paypal, and with their recent acquisition of the Verizon Trust Root, they are now rank #2 for high assurance security certifications, trailing behind Symantec.
